Trackway Hire Guide

Guide To Trackway Hire

Everything you need to know about effective trackway hire solutions

What is trackway hire?

In the most simplistic terms, trackway hire is the rental of a temporary ground solution. Trackway is placed over tricky terrains where people, transport or heavy plant machinery need to pass over, stand or park safely. As well as protecting the people or vehicles using them they also protect the ground underneath from damage.

What industries is trackway hire most commonly provided for?

Trackway is used across a broad range of industries. The most common are of course the construction industry and outdoor events. We find these are our most frequent clients. We also work with local councils to implement roadworks, utility companies (particularly when fixing issues), sporting stadiums, oil and gas works, solar and wind farms, power plants, and telecommunications companies. Ground protection provides effective access solutions across various industries. Take a look here to see who we’ve worked with.

What are some of the use cases?

Why is it an important day-to-day aspect of safety and work processes for many industries and sectors?

Without trackway panels fitted in the correct places on-site, the job or activity cannot go ahead. Ground protection is often a health and safety requirement or written into contracts created by local councils. Where dangerous equipment is concerned, your insurer may also refuse to insure or payout if trackway panels are not in place on-site. The use of ground mats is often required by agricultural groups and the heritage council on sites and grounds of historical importance.

What if we choose not to use trackway?

Temporary roadway mats are not always directly a legal requirement; however, the safety of your employees and the public is. Protecting the ground, site equipment and machinery is also not likely to be legally required but by doing so it contributes to overall site safety. Neglecting your employees, the public and the site by not obtaining proper ground protection can result in a myriad of costly fines, civil court cases, and punishments. In some circumstances, legal cases.

Temporary roadway mats are not just a ‘nice to have’ to help the job run smoother. They are essential for site safety, pedestrian safety, ground safety, as well as nature and wildlife preservation.

Types of trackway hire products & solutions

Ground protection mats

Designed for medium-duty, vehicular access, ground protection mats provide the perfect solution for a speedy and versatile roadway system across tricky ground conditions.

Aluminium trackway panels

With zero trip hazards to meet the safety and operational needs of pedestrians and vehicles. Our latest aluminium DTH trackway panels are primarily designed to provide a 3.0 metre wide load-bearing temporary access. This allows even the heaviest road-going vehicles to safely travel over the harshest of terrain.

TuffTrack, heavy-duty mats

Designed for heavy plant and machinery, TuffTrak® is a dual-sided, solid composite road mat suitable for used as a temporary roadway, site compound or crane pad.

How do you know which trackway type you need to hire?

All in all, the choice depends on factors like the ground conditions, the weight and type of traffic, and the specific requirements of your project. Our team can guide you based on your needs.

We remove the pressure from our clients by offering an on-call consultation before booking with our service desk team. Following this one of our engineers will assess and further map out requirements by attending the site ahead of the hire and fitting. We do this in order to preform a more in depth assessment and safety check. This means you don’t necessarily need to know which type of trackway you need to here, you just need to be able to provide us with as much information as possible for your project. Our trusted approach has led to many success stories.

However, if you would like to know which type of trackway you will likely need, here are our recommendations based on common hire requirements along with factors we look at on our initial survey.

1. For heavy machinery

The two options here would be our Aluminium Trackway Pannels or TuffTrak heavy-duty mats. To choose between the two we would look at
the type and weight of vehicles, the axle weight, the volume of traffic, and whether or not this is a transmission project amongst multiple other factors.

2. For festivals & temporary car parks

Aluminium trackway panels are usually the most suitable here, and we commonly see this type of trackway used at festivals across the UK for this reason. However, certain areas of the festival may require lighter ground protection mats or a more heavy-duty trackway like TuffTrak.

3. For temporary road access

As vehicles will be travelling on the temporary road this would always be a choice between Aluminium trackway panels and Tuftrak. Again, to decide between the two we would look at components like, the weight and width of vehicles travelling on the road and other factors like overhead powerlines.

4. For usage in remote locations

The weather becomes a big factor in our decision in remote locations. As well as uneven, rocky terrain, remote locations are exposed to the elements with limited shelter, winder barriers or shade. The season of the year will likely help us choose between Tufftrak or aluminium trackway panels.

5. For smaller private events

These tend to have smaller amounts of footfall, light-duty equipment and standard vehicles (if any at all!) passing over the trackway. This means a more lightweight trackway can be used. Ground protection mats are easy to transport and can be laid by two persons and no equipment.
