Joy for team Retford on Derby Day at Davis Trackhire!
In the latest Davis Trackhire culture event, team Retford emerged victorious in a closely-fought battle in the inaugural Frederick Davis Cup memorial football match, overcoming close rivals Team Newmains 8-5* to take the bragging rights for 2023.
Billed as “The Clash of The Titans” and played out in front of a capacity crowd at the well-renowned Retford Oaks Academy, the long-awaited and eagerly anticipated fixture certainly lived up to the hype and high levels of trash-talking which preceded it.
Playing for the much-coveted trophy – named in memory of the late Freddy Davis, father of Co-Directors Blake & Travis – Team Retford raced into a significant early lead thanks to braces from captian Shaun Varley and the lively Ben Allen, however quick-fire strikes from Newmains skipper Jordan Savage and young winger Jack MacDonald brought the visitors back into it.
An early Newmains goal after the break sparked hopes of a memorable comeback, however full-back Alan Breckenridge spurned a golden opportunity from the penalty spot following a contentious handball decision from referee Andy Rushforth. The hosts then launched a quick counter, with of an unfortunate Breckenridge own goal restoring their two-goal cushion.
There was still time for another late flurry of goals, with another 2 Retford strikes either side of a fine solo Newmains effort securing a memorable victory for the home side.
