Davis Trackhire supports Royal opening of the Queensferry Crossing.

2017 has been a huge year for Davis Trackhire, during which we have supplied our temporary access systems to some of the most prestigious events in the UK – but arguably none more so than the recent grand opening of the brand new Queensferry Crossing by none other than Her Royal Highness The Queen.

Davis Trackhire were enlisted by the main event contractor to supply and install 28 aluminium DTH Panels (complete with edge ramps) to cover the expansion joints over the £1.35bn structure to allow 50,000 pedestrians to safely cross the 1.7 mile passage over the River Forth over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd September, followed by a further 10,000 local residents and school children, before officially re-opening to traffic. To accommodate the high number of spectators, an additional 450 panels were also installed in a nearby field to create a temporary park and ride car park.

Prior to the installation, we granted the main contractor use of the main workshop in our Glasgow head office to prepare the panels that would be used on the bridge and make them fit for royalty – by painting them royal blue to represent the St Andrew’s Cross.

The meticulous installation began at 23:00 and our highly qualified crews worked through the night to install 6 panels to each expansion joint, complete with a geotextile underlay to add extra protection to the pristine new road surface and pedestrian edge ramps to eliminate any potential trip hazards, before finally completing the project at 5:00am the next morning ready for the descent of the eager crowds and of course the Royal Party.

We were contacted by the production staff, whom we had already worked with on other events, for the opening ceremony for the new bridge and we were delighted to get involved in another challenging project. It’s nice to be involved in these milestone events and having our panels painted was certainly something different.

After the grand opening, the Davis crews were on site following Tuesday evening to commence the recovery process, which was completed by the early hours – ready for the hoards of commuters to resume use of the bridge the following day.
